Make a set for yourself or to gift to your artist loved ones.

I refer to this method and recipe of making oil pastels as ‘Pigment sticks’ because of their diversity in possible outcome - they can be as oily or as waxy as you prefer- modifying the recipe to include more or less wax or oil will give you a variety of results from the creamiest lipstick-like fine quality Sennelier Pastel to a harder flakier pigment stick closer in texture and performance to a crayon.

Pigment sticks can be varied and diverse in their ingredients depending on the desired results for the artist. They create splendid textures and a unique appearance on paper- and they can be used on canvas. Distinct from the drier “chalk” or “gum” pastel I find the oil pastel medium to be satisfying to draw with and versatile in it’s character- allowing for manipulation on the paper simply with using the warmth of the artists’ hand to create fields of saturated color, or by applying oil medium with a brush after coloring with the pigment stick on paper or canvas.

They’re a great art medium for children, and easy to transport- and with a simple paper or aluminum foil wrapper- they can be held without damage to the pastel or mess on the artists’ hand. Unlike crayons made primarily of hard wax- Pigment sticks like these oil pastels can be blended on paper- creating subtle gradients and luminosity of color and the moisture and density makes for a pleasant experience while drawing- distinct from chalk or dry pastels.
And this tutorial includes it all walking you though the process with all my advice on creating the finest natural pastels possible WITHOUT USING SYNTHETIC SILICONE MOLDS- I will teach you how to make a FULLY BIODEGRADABLE MOLD at home!
Natural Dyes resulting from time intensive color extraction either from found/foraged/salvaged or carefully cultivated plants are particularly special to make into oil pastel color that can live on.
